En Foco: New Works/Crossing Boundaries

En Foco, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to cultural diversity in photography and celebrating its 38th year, to present a retrospective look at its prestigious New Works Photography Fellowship Award program. Since 1998, photographers selected for the program have produced highly diverse bodies of work; increasingly, the award has stimulated the creation of work that moves beyond the boundaries of traditional and toward unconventional forms of the photographic medium. This exhibit, curated by BRIC’s Director of Contemporary Art Elizabeth Ferrer, will include work by some 10 photographers, demonstrating the significance of En Foco’s award in extending their artistic practice. Works will include elaborately staged compositions, photos made with historic processes like tintype, wall sculpture based on appropriated images, and images made through varied forms of digital manipulation.

From production and creation to access and use, evolving technologies such as smart phones have made bookmaking a rapidly evolving art form. “Pulp to Pixels: Artists’ Books in the Digital Age” is an exhibition exploring interactive, generative art with text and image. Some of the pieces function as books that can be enhanced using technology; others require a smartphone or tablet to view them at all.
Among the featured artists are Paul Zelevansky, Jie Qi, Colette Fu, Danielle Aubert, Amaranth Borsuk, Gretchen Henderson, and M. Kasper.

Without Walls explores new modes of public art and muralism through a unique collaborative residency program between Breadboard and muraLAB. Six Philadelphia artists were selected to develop new concepts and models for proposed public art projects during a six-month residency at NextFab Studio, a high-tech workshop and prototyping center located at the University City Science Center.

As part of Philagrafika 2010, an international festival to be held in the region, this exhibition presents thought-provoking and excellent examples of contemporary hand-pulled prints, photography and digital images by professional artists. Main Line Art Center has invited three notable jurors, Cindi Ettinger, Master Printmaker, Toni Rosati, artist and teacher and Peter Barberie, Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art, to select artists from the region who are pushing the boundaries of printmaking and photography.

Medium Resistance presents contemporary works of craft and print that resist old-fashioned distinctions between high art and artisanship. Informed by historical avant-garde practices such as those of the Productivists, Black Mountain College and, more recently, theInterventionists, these provocative works reassess the mediumsexpressive, communicative, and material possibilities beyond known aesthetic, social, and political boundaries. Vessels and posters, digital images and books, to name just a few examples, straddle the divisions between art, craft, and mass production, strategically exploring each format s relative autonomy and usefulness, its potential for participation and collaboration, communication and dissemination, and aesthetic, social, and technical labor.
